A local academy trust is awarding children aged seven to 11 who have gone above and beyond with a special graduation ceremony at the end of the first year of the introduction of Suffolk Children’s University.

The St Edmundsbury and Ipswich Diocesan Multi Academy Trust, which has 18 primary schools to its name, took part in graduation events at various venues across Suffolk for pupils who had excelled in their extra-curricular learning.

The primary school pupils wore gowns and caps and also received a certificate to mark their achievements. The children also partook in the traditional throwing of caps in the air which was witnessed by parents and carers.

In order to graduate, pupils needed to collect hours of learning in their Learning Passport,  by taking part in after school activities including visiting the local library or going to Cubs or Brownies as well as taking part in school based extra- curricular clubs, as part of the National Children’s University scheme.

One Year 4 pupil at Stoke-by-Nayland Primary School said: “The graduation was so fun, we didn’t want to leave! It was the best day ever!

Chief Executive of the St Edmundsbury and Ipswich Diocesan Multi Academy Trust, Jane Sheat, said: “We are keen to encourage pupils and parents to engage in learning and to raise aspirations within all our schools.

“We are working in partnership with Essex Children’s University to develop this across all schools with a specific focus on disadvantaged pupils.

“We have almost 3000 pupils educated in our 18 church primary schools across Suffolk and we want to give them the very best opportunities.”

Graduation venues for the children included Kentwell Hall in Long Melford, Red House in Aldeburgh and Suffolk One in Ipswich.
